GETTING STARTED

My favourite shopping place

1. Listen and read

Mai: How was your trip to Bac Ha, Alice?

Alice: It’s awesome. I like Bac Ha Fair most. It’s an open-air market in Lao Cai.

Mai: What do you like about it?

Alice: Many things. The people at the market were wearing really colourful costumes.

Mai: Yeah ... They came from different minority groups.

Alice: I think so, and most of the products sold at the market were home-grown and home-made. I love it.

Mai: Do you have similar markets in New Zealand?

Alice: Yes, we do. Back in my city, Auckland, we have a farmers’ market every Saturday where farmers sell their products. My mother loves shopping there, and she rarely misses one.

Mai: I prefer shopping at the supermarket. I can find almost everything I need there, and I don’t have to bargain. All the items have fixed prices on their price tags.

Alice: Right. It’s more convenient.

Mai: Yeah ... Oh, I’ve got to go. My art lesson starts at one o'clock, and I want to go to a convenience store on the way. See you later.

Alice: See you.

Your dream shopping place

Work individually

1. Imagine a shopping place you would like to have in your neighborhood.

Answer:

I would like to have a new shopping place which has a large playground for the children and a large swimming pool in my neighborhood.

2. Draw it or find a picture similiar to it.

Answer:

GETTING STARTED

3. Present it to the class.

Answer:

My dream shopping mall is a secret mall, hidden from sight with the building situated underground of the central park near the place where I live. The only way to access this mall is from the levitating lift camouflaged by a random tree in the park. It takes a while to find this lift but it is worth, once you get down to the hidden mall. Once you enter the elevator, the elevator’s cab will move down to the lobby, where you can see the mall with a wide-angle view when it runs down. This mall has 4 floors: The lobby and three shopping floors. At the lobby, there are a lot of food stalls where customers can sit there and have a conversation or just relax after shopping. On the three other floors, there are dozens of pop-up stores with many kinds of products. These stores attract bunches of shoppers to buy products or even some people just window shopping. The first shopping floor focuses on food, drinks and household products. The second shopping floor sells every product for kids that we could ever find. They also have a super large children's playground. There is a large bookstore, an electric store and an arcade for teenagers on the third shopping floor. These floors caught many teenagers’ attention. I hope one day my dream shopping place will come true.
